Machine PrecisionVolume = 4/3 · π · a · b · c | Surface Area ≈ 4π · [((ab)^p + (ac)^p + (bc)^p) / 3]^(1/p), p ≈ 1.6075
Step-by-Step Mathematical Derivation
Subjecting the unit sphere x² + y² + z² ≤ 1 to the linear stretch matrix diag(a, b, c): V = 4/3 · π · a · b · c. This formula is exact for all ellipsoids.
Because exact surface area requires incomplete elliptic integrals of the first and second kind, Knud Thomsen devised the formula: Area ≈ 4π · [((ab)ᵖ + (ac)ᵖ + (bc)ᵖ) / 3]^(1/p), where optimal parameter p = ln(3)/ln(2) ≈ 1.6075.
Thomsen's formula bounds maximum relative error to less than 1.061% over all possible triaxial geometries.
