Analytical Proof & Invariants
Machine PrecisionGoverning Mathematical Formula:
Total Ultimate Capacity Q_ult = Skin Friction (Σ f_s · A_s) + End Bearing (q_p · A_p)
Step-by-Step Mathematical Derivation
1
Shaft Surface Area
Shaft Area A_s = Perimeter (48" / 12 = 4.0 ft) × Depth (45 ft) = 180.0 sq ft.
2
Skin Friction Resistance
Q_skin = 180.0 sq ft × 650 PSF = 117,000 lbs = 117.0 kips.
3
Tip End Bearing Resistance
Toe Area A_p = (12" × 12" / 144) = 1.74 sq ft. Q_tip = 1.74 sq ft × 45,000 PSF = 78,500 lbs = 78.5 kips.
4
Allowable Working Load
Q_ult = 117.0 + 78.5 = 195.5 kips. Applying standard geotechnical safety factor FS = 2.5: Q_all = 195.5 / 2.5 = 78.2 kips (39.1 tons).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Friction Piles and End-Bearing Piles?
Friction piles derive the vast majority of their load capacity from shearing resistance along the embedded sides of the pile shaft in clay/sand. End-bearing piles pass through soft upper soils to rest their tip directly on unyielding dense bedrock or cemented hardpan.
What is pile setup (freeze)?
During driving, soil pore water pressure spikes, temporarily reducing resistance. Over the next 24 to 72 hours, pore pressures dissipate and soil reconsolidates against the pile, significantly increasing load capacity (known as 'set-up' or freeze).
