Manual J Thermal Physics & Inverter Derating

1. Envelope Heat Loss Equation

Heat transmission through each opaque assembly and fenestration is computed as:

Q_loss = U × Area × (T_indoor - T_design_winter)
Q_infil = 1.08 × CFM × (T_indoor - T_design_winter)

2. Cold-Climate Inverter Low-Temp Derating

Standard AHRI ratings are measured at 47°F. At sub-freezing design temps (14°F), compressor suction pressure drops, decreasing refrigerant mass flow. Modern cold-climate variable-speed inverter heat pumps retain 75%–85% of rated capacity at 14°F before supplemental resistance strips are energized.

3. Thermal Balance Point Mechanics

The thermal balance point is the outdoor temperature where building heat loss exactly equals heat pump heating output. Below this threshold, supplemental electric resistance elements (1 kW = 3,412 BTU/hr) cycle on to bridge the thermal deficit.
